On the second day of the kick-off meeting, the new Tourism Carrying Capacity (TCC) Calculator was introduced—a practical tool designed to help destinations manage tourism sustainably. Drawing from diverse academic definitions, TCC is seen as a balance between maximising tourism benefits and minimising environmental, social, and economic strain.
The Alter Eco PLUS TCC Calculator simplifies this complex task. It analyses key tourism subsystems—accommodation, food and beverage, mobility, and attractions—against visitor profiles (hotel guests, non-hotel tourists, and day visitors), usage rates, and spending data. This helps destinations determine their real capacity and avoid overcrowding, traffic congestion, and resource strain.
Beyond tourist numbers, the tool also factors in infrastructure quality, digital strategies, and real-time data to guide smart tourism flow management and support sustainable mobility planning.
