The Tourism Carrying Capacity Limit (TCCL) tool developed in the ALTERECO project addresses the risk of over-tourism and its impact on the natural and cultural heritage of Mediterranean destinations.

The TO CARE MED project will extend the TCCL tool to other coastal, island, rural and protected natural tourist destinations, focusing on two aspects. First, the TCCL tool will be adapted to each destination. Then, it will be transferred using a ‘cascade training model’. This will bring methodologies from the transnational level to local learning and implementation.

The overall objective is to transfer and uptake the The Tourism Carrying Capacity Limit (TCCL) tool to partners’ destinations. Expected changes include:

– Improved Tourism Management: Implementing the TCCL tool helps manage tourist flows, ensuring that tourism activities do not exceed environmental, social, and economic limits;

– Enhanced Policy Making: The tool aids policymakers in creating strategies and plans that balance tourism development with preserving natural and cultural heritage;

– Sustainable Ecotourism Development: The project promotes a model that integrates the protection, restoration and valorisation of natural and cultural assets, leading to more sustainable tourism.
